Because Sam is just as convinced that they are vampires as the others are. He knows that there is no such thing as vampires but he still has his weapons with him just in case one does come out of its coffin. This shows that you should always be ready for anything and prepared for anything because no matter what you think will happen, it could happen and if it does happen, you need to be prepared for it.
